Texas State legislature officially established Ellis County on December 20, 1849 when it passed a bill sponsored by Gen. Edward H. Tarrant. It was drawn from Navarro County and is named for Richard Ellis. Today, Ellis County is home to over 152,000 residents. The County’s total area is 952 square miles, 940 square miles of it is land and 12 square miles is water and is comprised of 15 cities, 7 towns, and the unincorporated areas that include Avalon, Forreston, and Telico. LOCATION
Ellis County, Texas (County) is located in North Central Texas. Waxahachie, the largest town and county seat, is on Interstate Highway 35E thirty miles south of Dallas Major highways in the County include Interstate 35E, Interstate 45, U.S. Highway 67, U.S. Highway 77, U.S. Highway 287, and State Highway 34 (Texas). The following Counties are adjacent to Ellis County: Dallas County (North), Kaufman County (Northeast), Henderson County (East), Navarro County (Southeast), Hill County (Southwest), Johnson County (West), and Tarrant County (Northwest).
